History

Established in 1990 by a group of interested Newton County residents, the Newton Theatre Company began as an itinerant group performing at available venues throughout the area. The first production was "The Wizard of Oz" and was held at Clarke College. Known then as the Newton County Little Theatre, the company did not obtain a home until January of 1991. At that time, Mr. Max Connett donated the Roxy Theatre to the City of Newton, who in turn leased it to the Company. A major overhaul followed and in June of 1994 the newly-named Newton Theatre Company moved into its permanent home in downtown Newton.

Since then, the Company has grown by leaps and bounds and has produced such smash hits as ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Steel Magnolias’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Carousel’, ‘The Music Man’, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Annie’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Shrek’, “Little Shop of Horrors’, “Forever Plaid’, ‘Little Women’, ‘Anne of Green Gables’, ’Rumpelstiltskin’, and many more.

Our theatre has 3 productions each year, including a youth production, an adult production, and a musical production. The future continues to look bright with a host of exciting productions in the works.
